Aiguille du Midi in the Autumn Situated in the Haute-Savoie region of France, Chamonix is bordered by Switzerland and Italy and dominated by the spiky mountain chain which peaks at the top of the Mont Blanc (4811m) - the highest in Western Europe. There are two distinct seasons: summer and winter, and the area is busy for most of the year with different activities at the fore-front of people's minds. The activities that can be enjoyed in Chamonix vary from the extreme mountaineering and skiing to sedate walks in the stunning scenery. Chamonix boasts its own golf course, outdoor swimming pool and sports centre. Whilst the principal town is of the same name 'Chamonix' is often used to cover the whole valley, stretching over 55km to the Swiss border. Just a short distance away from Chamonix town are small beautiful communes that make up the valley these include Servoz, Les Houches, Les Bossons - the 'base-camp' of alpinism, Les Praz, Les Tines, Argentiere, Montroc and Vallorcine. View to the Grand Montets Chamonix has plenty to see. The Montenvers railway runs every day of the year taking tourists and alpinists to the Mer de Glace at a height of 1913m. Once at the top you can take a trip down to the glacier and explore the ice grotto. The Mer de Glace is one of the longest glaciers in Europe and makes part of the longest off piste ski run in Europe, the Vallée Blanche. The Aiguille de Midi sits at 3842m and is a play ground for mountaineers and for many the start of the Mont Blanc ascent. For tourist the two stage cable car ride provides unenviable views of the France, Switzerland and Italy. Click here to view our properties.
